DELTA AIR LINES

Country: USA
IATA code : DL

Delta have been very good to bag collectors by periodically moving things around, adding a language or two here and dropping some elsewhere. The early bags are very helpful by having by having a release date printed somewhere. When I used a Delta bag for sick bag of the month and complained that I couldn't find a country called Delta in my atlas, some helpful person e-mailed with an explanation. Call me an old cynic but irony is lost on some people.

This first bag dates from June 1977 and has instructions scattered around in three languages. {Spot the deliberate mistake in the Spanish entry}. The logo is pretty hard to miss. (From the Brotchie Bequest)

Moving right along to July 1980, the Germans and Japanese have been rehabilitated into the world order (Don't mention the ***.) The errant accent over the U in nauseas has been moved to its rightful place over the preceding A.

In a crisis of identity the large logo is dropped for a rather formal declaration of incorporation. (Swap from Niek Vermeulen)

The US trade deficit with Japan is intolerable. One of the languages is dropped.

The 'bring back the logo' movement wins the day. (Swap from Niek Vermeulen)

Japanese reinstated and Thailand achieves Favoured Nation trading status. In an attempt to garner greater market share the corporate font is changed and Air Lines is dropped. (Swap from Daniel Kahleyss)

Grey power is in the ascendancy as the accountants move in. Watch out, the tin-tie bag's days are numbered.

China achieves Favoured Nation trading status. (Swap from Wolfgang Franken)

Consultants recommend a new softer caring image. A more rounded font without all those harsh upper case letters is chosen. Air Lines makes its reappearance in pastel blue.

Italians and Koreans now warmly welcomed (Don't mention the ***s). (Swap from Niek Vermeulen)
