Q. How do you make a Maltese cross?
A. Stick your finger in his eye (or is that how you make a venetian blind?)
How well I remember (or apparently not) this childhood joke that is probably now banned under the fascism of Political Correctness. The cross, of course, is the symbol of the Knights of St. John who fled to Malta after their base in Rhodes was taken during the crusades. (IATA code:KM, Knights of Malta - geddit?) The legacy of their stay on the island gives Malta much of it's appeal as a tourist destination and played an important part in making it a fortress at the crossroads of the Mediterranean. The efforts of the Maltese and use of the fortified harbour of Valetta during World War II earned the island a George Medal for bravery from the British Government. Although the appellation Malta G.M. appears to have gone out of fashion now, the island is fondly remembered by the British because of their delicious, round chocolates and their rare breed of falcon.
Who cares about the bags? The first one is an older version and was a swap from Charles Sant. (Say, isn't that a Maltese name?)
